About the Consortium

Advancing liver disease research across Europe

SALVE (Study of Alcohol-Related Liver Disease in Europe) is a multi-centre research consortium uniting leading hepatologists, pathologists, and clinical researchers from across Europe. Our collaborative network spans 21 countries and brings together expertise from major university hospitals and research centres.

Our mission is to improve outcomes for patients with alcohol-related liver disease through collaborative research into natural history, pathogenesis, biomarker development, and novel therapeutic approaches. By pooling clinical data and expertise across borders, we aim to accelerate discoveries that translate into better patient care.

SALVE members contribute to landmark studies in hepatology, publishing in top-tier journals and shaping clinical guidelines across the continent. Our work encompasses the full spectrum of alcohol-related liver disease, from early detection and risk stratification to advanced cirrhosis management and liver transplantation.

Collaborative Research

Multi-centre studies pooling clinical data from leading institutions across 21 European countries.

Clinical Innovation

Developing novel biomarkers, treatment strategies, and cost-effective referral pathways.

Knowledge Translation

Turning research findings into clinical guidelines and improved patient outcomes.

Our Network

Our Work

Research

SALVE's research priorities and a selection of recent publications co-authored by members of the steering committee.

Research Focus Areas

Natural History of ALD

Characterising disease progression, prognostic factors, and clinical outcomes across the spectrum of alcohol-related liver disease through multi-centre European cohorts.

Diagnostics & Biomarkers

Refining diagnostic criteria for alcohol-associated hepatitis and validating non-invasive markers (including spleen and liver stiffness) for risk stratification.

Histopathology Standardisation

Developing and validating the SALVE histologic grading and staging system for ALD, harmonising pathological assessment across European centres.
